Offering on the Verge
This work is the result of observations on a cycle from Santiago (Chile) to Ushuaia (Argentina). The paintings and video work are mainly formed from the perceptions, chants and the repetition of long distance cycling. Road kill was a constant visual, and was mainly domestic carnage. This became source for my work and coming from an animal benevolent country, I found it interesting in how anaesthetized I became to the subject. I was interested in how this highlighted a cultural difference in the attitude of what other countries deem acceptable as roadside "offerings" and the human relationship with pets. Another visual source was the rendering portraits of past dignitaries issued on stamps from Chile and Argentina. The contrast of human and animal, aired a tone of sacrificial ritual.
A Chocolate Box
I have been working on the perceptions of the landscape and particularly areas where perceptions cross over from aesthetics to function or from romantic to reality in an effort to alter the Romantic Highlands myth. More work on Video Page.
Jeans fa the Schemes
Collaborating on artwork with artist John Mullen, we looked at our merged profiles in digital print and video. Sourcing imagery from online catalogues, we invented a world of “schemie” fashion couture. In the artwork, hierarchy structures developed in the characters we created where a story emerged around one character’s wish to intellectually and socially elevate.
Scotch Optimism
Developing Scottish imaginary by using what I find around me on a daily basis, rendering playschool media of tissue paper, coloured crayons and sugar paper I have been perfecting an amateur hour aesthetic. They resonate Doric satirist Alexander Scott’s ode to Scotch Optimism: “Through a gless Darkly.” So put by Neil Mulholland.
